Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord

Brothers and Sisters,

One of the most powerful images of us as God’s people is that of ‘family’.  We truly are God’s family.  We are his children.  We are brothers and sisters to each other in and through Jesus Christ and by the working of the Holy Spirit who enables us to cry out, “Abba”, that is, “Father”.  This image sustains us in our Faith, especially when that very same Faith is challenged and challenging, often at one and the  same time.

You know that our family is far from perfect and like many families, it can be dysfunctional at times.  Some members of the family – priests, deacons, and religious in positions of trust and leadership – have behaved badly.  That is putting it mildly.  Let’s face it, acts of abuse upon the innocent and vulnerable  are truly evil, plain and simple.  The pain, suffering, betrayal, and loss of innocence felt by many victims lasts a lifetime.

I am releasing a list of priests, deacons and religious who have been credibly accused of sexual abuse of minors and young people in the Diocese of Fresno. This List is meant to be part of an on-going process of healing for everyone.  Being released on the Feast of the Transfiguration is no coincidence.  That ‘mountain top moment’, when Jesus manifested himself to his friends in his glory, changed the lives of the disciples forever.  We all hope that this moment changes us, and that means all of us, for the better.

This will be a ‘living’ document, that is, as new information becomes available over time, new names may be added to the list in the future.   I wish to acknowledge the work of the Diocesan Review Board.  Each member of that Board has put in countless hours in assisting me in the first and current determination of this list of credibly accused. A report from the Review Board and a FAQ page has been provided with explanations of what is considered ‘credible’.  That page will offer answers to other relevant questions as well.     

We must do everything in our power to prevent instances of abuse from ever happening at any time or anywhere here in the Diocese of Fresno. The efforts of our Safe Environment training and education of all clergy, employees, volunteers and our children and youth, to recognize signs of abuse and the appropriate response to abuse of any types is of the utmost importance.  All of this grows and flows from the initial implementation of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People by Bishop Steinbock in 2003.  We are determined to be vigilant.  It is perpetual vigilance.

A ’final’ word on the timing of this release would be in order, lest anyone should conclude that this has been determined by recent events, press conferences or undue pressure.  As my Priests and Deacons heard during our Convocation back in late January, my intention was to release the list during the past Lenten season.  Obviously, that did not happen but now is the time during which our local Church will be touched by its own full measure of penitence and penance.        

When all is said and done, brothers and sisters, it is never too late to do the right thing.  That too is a work in progress, at least it is for me.

I ask that you join me in imploring God’s mercy upon the Church and dispensing an abundance of graces for the healing of all victims of sexual abuse. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Mercy, intercede for us. Saint Therese of Lisieux, pray for us.

Fiesta de la Transfiguración del Señor

Hermanos y hermanas,

Uno de nuestros reflejos más importantes como pueblo de Dios es el de “familia”. Realmente somos la familia de Dios. Somos hijos. Somos hermanos y hermanas por medio de Jesucristo y por gracia del Espíritu Santo quien nos concede clamar “Abba”, es decir, “Padre”. Este reflejo nos fecunda en nuestra fe, especialmente cuando nuestra fe se convierte en un desafío y es desafiada al mismo tiempo.

Sabemos que nuestra familia no es perfecta y, como muchas familias, puede ser disfuncional. Algunos miembros de nuestra familia; sacerdotes, diáconos y religiosos en posiciones de poder y confianza, han actuado mal, por decirlo delicadamente. La realidad es que, los actos de abuso contra inocentes y vulnerables son simplemente malvados. El dolor, sufrimiento, traición y pérdida de la inocencia que experimentan algunas víctimas los acompañan el resto de sus vidas.

Hoy presento una lista de sacerdotes, diáconos y religiosos que han sido creíblemente acusados de abuso sexual a menores de edad y adolescentes en la Diócesis de Fresno. Con esta lista deseamos iniciar un continuo proceso de sanación para todos. Presentar esta lista durante la Fiesta de la Transfiguración de nuestro Señor no es coincidencia. Ese “momento en la cima de la montaña”, cuando Jesús en su gloria se manifestó a sus amigos, transformó la vida de los discípulos para siempre. Esperando que este momento, el inicio de este proceso de sanación, nos transforme a todos para bien.

Este es un documento “viviente”, es decir, a medida que dispongamos de nueva información, nuevos nombres podrían ser agregados a la lista. Deseo agradecer el trabajo de la Junta de Revisión Diocesana. Cada miembro de esa Junta ha dedicado incontables horas a ayudarme en la primera y actual resolución de esta lista de acusados creíbles. También presentamos un informe de la Junta de Revisión y una sección de Preguntas Frecuentes, las cuales explican lo que se considera “creíble”. Esta sección también ofrecerá respuestas a otras preguntas importantes.    

Debemos hacer todo lo posible para prevenir casos de abuso en cualquier momento o en cualquier lugar en la Diócesis de Fresno. El empeño de nuestros entrenamientos y enseñanzas de Ambiente Seguro al clero, empleados, voluntarios, niños y adolescentes, para identificar signos de cualquier forma de abuso y la respuesta adecuada es de máxima importancia. Esto inicia gracias al Obispo Steinbock en 2003 cuando comenzó la implementación de la Carta para la Protección de Niños y Jóvenes. Hemos decidido ser prudentes y permanecer en vigilancia perpetua.

Para finalizar, corresponde hablar sobre las circunstancias de esta publicación, para evitar cualquier conclusión equivocada de que ha sido forzada por recientes acontecimientos, conferencias de prensa o presiones injustas. Mis sacerdotes y diáconos fueron informados en nuestra Convocación del Clero a finales de enero, mi intención era presentar esta lista durante Cuaresma. Obviamente no fue posible, pero ahora es momento de que nuestra Iglesia se enfrente a su propia medida de arrepentimiento y penitencia.       

Hermanos, cuando todo está dicho y hecho, nunca es demasiado tarde para hacer lo correcto. También eso es una tarea constante, al menos para mí.

Les solicito que nos unamos para implorar la misericordia de Dios sobre nuestra Iglesia y que conceda abundantes gracias para la sanación de todas las víctimas de abuso sexual. Que la Santísima Virgen María, Madre de la Misericordia, interceda por nosotros. Santa Teresa de Lisieux, ruega por nosotros.
