The Tribunal ministry is one part of the Church’s effort to offer healing and hope for the victims of broken marriages. The Tribunal investigates cases of marital failure to determine whether parties in certain instances may be free to remarry.
The Judicial Vicar, acting in the name of the bishop, oversees the tribunal and is assisted by experienced personnel who have received training in Canon Law. There are other areas of ecclesiastical legal concern in which the canon lawyers can offer advice and insight.
Annulment petitions, dispensations for mixed marriage and other canonical procedures are initiated through the local pastor, the parochial vicar or the deacon (find a parish). The local parish ministers determine, as best they can, the character of the request and the manner in which the application should be pursued.
