General Information:
There are currently 45 deacons serving in the Diocese of Fresno. All but three of these are assigned to their home parish. One of these serves as Chancellor for the diocese, one as Director of the Diaconate Program and the other is a chaplain for a prison.
There are 18 aspirants in discernment preparing for formation. The formation classes begin in September with one formation weekend being held at the Pastoral Center each month. The formation students also meet to study together for two hours each week in each of the deaneries.
GENERAL CRITERIA FOR DEACON APPLICANTS
Similarly, deacons must be dignified, not deceitful, not addicted to drink, not greedy for sordid gain, holding fast to the mystery of faith with a clear conscience. Moreover, they should be tested first, then, if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. Deacons may be married only once and must manage their children and their households well. Thus those who serve well as deacons gain good standing and much confidence in their faith in Christ Jesus.
