MEET THE BISHOP
Bishop Steinbock was born in Los Angeles, California, July 16, 1937.
He was ordained to the priesthood May 1, 1963, at the Cathedral of St. Vibiana
in Los Angeles by Cardinal James Francis McIntyre. He served as associate
pastor in two parishes in East Los Angeles from May 1, 1963, until he was
appointed administrator of Santa Isabel parish in East Los Angeles on December
11, 1972. In April of 1973, he was assigned as associate pastor of St. Vibiana’s
Cathedral, Los Angeles. On February 1,1981, he was assigned as parochial
vicar of St. Vibiana’s Cathedral. While in the Los Angeles Archdiocese, he
served as president of the Los Angeles Priests’ Council 1979-1980, and also
served on the Board of Consultors of the Los Angeles Archdiocese 1979-1982.
On May 29, 1984, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Midila and Auxiliary Bishop
of the Diocese of Orange, California, by Pope John Paul II. He was consecrated
as bishop by Cardinal Timothy Manning on July 14, 1984, in the Diocese of
Orange. On July 18, 1984, he was appointed Vicar General of the Diocese of
Orange. He was appointed diocesan administrator by the Board of Consultors
of the Diocese of Orange on July 29, 1986. He was appointed as the third
diocesan bishop of the Diocese of Santa Rosa, California, on January 27,
1987, by Pope John Paul II. On October 15, 1991, he was appointed as the
fourth diocesan bishop of the Diocese of Fresno, California, by Pope John
Paul II, and installed on November 25, 1991.
